Stone carving
I am an experienced stone carver, creating unique forms that have been part of exhibitions and group shows in London since 2004. Many of the pieces shown below are sold or NFS but please do contact me if you wish to discuss any commissions or pieces that interest you.
I am particularly interested in continuing to develop skills in letter carving and have enjoyed training from expert stone carvers and letter carvers Tom Perkins, John Neilson and Eric Marland. You can read more about my carving inspiration below.

My carvings are about learning and the physical, emotional and material responses to stone. When I’m carving my whole self is focused and responsive – drawing curves with my hands and in my head, bending to catch planes and lines, turning – these moves are reflected in some of the forms that emerge.
I work intuitively – direct carving. I love the rhythm, the sounds, the feel and the smell of the stone. For me, it’s a material that absorbs and releases energy. Feeling the space around the stone is essential as I work.
My first experience of stone carving was during my Art/Education degree. A lot of my subsequent learning and experience with stone has been in Portland, Dorset with workshops run by the Portland Sculpture Trust. Carving in the quarry, surrounded by rock, air, sea and light, is crucial to my understanding of the true nature of the material with which I work.
Selecting stone is important, as it is often the riven stone that is the starting point. I hand-tool all my sculptures, just as the quarrymen did to release the monumental blocks of limestone when the quarries were in use. I am interested in the relationship between the formal, carved and informal, riven elements of the stone. Some of my more figurative pieces and experiments with letter cutting explore this connection.
